A Breath of Fresh Air

You wouldn’t think being outside in a city comparable to New York would be enjoyable; but here in Berlin it’s amazing. Not only can you walk around without the stench of trash or sewage (ok, sometimes you get a whiff of sewage), you can actually eat outside in almost all areas. In other cities I have been to it is hard to enjoy a nice salad or pasta bowl when eating outside. Here, there are very few bugs and the weather is perfect for doing such a thing. We have eaten at several different outdoor restaurants in the past five days. Some are simply chairs on the sidewalks and others are tables set up in lawns. Either way it is nice to have fresh air and a changing scenery while eating.

Another thing, a few of us pointed out at dinner, is that people here live very environmentally friendly lives, and it seems like there isn’t that much effort put into it. There is no air conditioning anywhere, but I never seem to be uncomfortably hot. You can recycle all of your glass bottles and get money back. Cyclists have more power than most drivers and all pedestrians. And finally, you get to control how much water to use when flushing the toilet! It definitely seems like whatever the German people are doing to help the environment is working. I mean at least I get to eat outside, right?
